The bookseller

Unable to read, when confronted with a specific request, the bookseller would trawl through his piles of books arranged by size and colour, seeking a particular combination that matched the requestor’s style and mood. Thus, on requesting a racy novel about Cannes, one might receive a textbook on anatomy with a grey and green cover, and a fat hardback of photographs by Sydney Tiplo.
